KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Management & Leadership
OVERVIEW
I have managed teams since 2008, including building the Content Team from zero to seven people at Further Digital Marketing from 2016 to 2020.
I work with individuals to grow their skills and knowledge as part of their personal and professional development - aligning their objectives with those of the business.
Central to my approach is learning an individual's drivers and helping them to understand their own preferences, strengths and areas for development. Also key, is helping those individuals to learn how their colleagues tick and how to get the best from them - in particular communication.
Various training and an active interest in psychology fuel this growing understanding, helping me get the best from teams by helping them get the best from their roles.
Mentoring & Personal Development
I enjoy teaching, training and mentoring juniors providing the professional support they need to take control of their personal development.
Monthly 1-2-1s
My 1-2-1s are individual-focused and task/work-focused. By addressing the big-picture aspects of an individual's role, line managers can increase wellbeing and productivity, troubleshoot and reduce staff turnover.
1-2-1s can also become a place of training where soft skills such as (diplomacy, communication, emotional intelligence and dealing with conflict) can take place.
Teaching & Training
I have hosted dozens of lectures and interactive workshops for teams, covering many topics from Writing For Web and Tone Of Voice to How To Build A Persona and Storytelling in Marketing.
These sessions have been delivered to internal teams, clients and external bodies including:
-
University of East Anglia
-
City College Norwich
-
Chartered Institute of Marketing
-
Norwich Marketing Meet Up.

Public Speaking
I frequently play an ambassadorial role as a content evangelist, representing the agency at public events as well as private events for clients.

This includes a presentation and workshop for the Chartered Institute Of Marketing at the University Of East Anglia and presentations for The Broads Authority and others.

What my teams have said about me
Notes from emails, 360-degree feedback and leaving cards
01
“Gill’s role is so much more important than he thinks; not just in the delivery of an integral service that our business offers, but in the personality portrayed by this generation of the agency, and the direction in which the business is now heading.”
03
“I really enjoy our chats and have learned so much from you in particular.”
05
“From my first day at Further, I always felt like you somehow characterised the whole agency - the living embodiment of the slogan on the wall [‘brave curious minds’]. You are a staggeringly creative person - a one-man ideas machine. You’re also the only person who can turn a dull day at the office into an excursion on religion/sociology/psychology. I miss learning something I never expected on a simple trip for a cup of tea.”
02
“It's been an absolute pleasure working with you for the past 4+ years and you will truly be missed. Thank you for being a god-damn awesome manager and always supporting me!”
04
“Thanks for making me feel so welcome - like I’ve been here a lot longer than I actually have.”
06
“In the heavyweight content marketing ring, Gill is a champion. I have learned, and continue to learn a lot in working with him.”
